Poll: See Anything Different?

So here's a poll for everyone. Please review these two 30 second (approx.) videos, and let me know if anything looks different to you in my walking. The first one was taken March 10 before I left for China; the second was taken today, April 9. From my perspective, I can't really tell that much, so let me know your honest opinion. Thanks.

  1. well, I've watched you walk for years now so I'd have to say yes, I see a difference. In the hospital video you are moving more quickly, and with a greater fluidity, by which I mean smoother in your stride, less jerky altogether. It looks slightly better to me...are you sure you were exerting the same amount of effort each time? Also, you were getting pretty tired right before you left for China, spending such long hours at work and with your brother, is it possible you are simply better rested now? I know when you get tired, it is visible in your physical activity. Not trying to imply you aren't better--just that to make a fair comparison, everything has to be equal...
And am I losing my mind, or is your beard gone?

  2. I just watched it again---WTH???????? Where is your beard???? You are coming back soon, I strongly suggest you start growing it back right now, so it's in place when I pick you up at the Hairport!!!HHHHmmmmmphhhhh!!!

  3. The first and most striking thing I notice was you're standing straighter, there is less lurch to your walk. Iva

  4. The difference is subtle, but I see it. In the second video you walk taller, with what appears to be less stress on your lower back and hips. I agree with one of the previous comments -- that the walking is more fluid. Your mustache and no-beard action makes you look like a true Portland hipster!

    You are awesome, my man.

  5. Russell Calvin:

I agree with Tyler, but just on your video :) I also think that you are moving faster; however, as pointed out above, you just may be more energized! I cannot believe how fast your trip has gone. Looking forward to seeing you back at the office soon!!

  6. Yes, I think the difference is that there's less lateral motion to each step--you move your legs and hips more straight forward and back, rather than moving your hips significantly sideways with each step. That's what makes the movement more fluid, and also I think faster--it's not so much that your steps are faster, but that they are more efficient.

I am not qualified to comment on facial hair so shall remain mute on that subject.

  7. Hi Russ~ I agree with the rest of the posters. You seem to be moving faster, more confidently, and steadily. That's awesome!

  8. First off, thanks for your comments. It does feel like I am not "lurching" so much and am a bit more fluid. I shaved the beard only because I have not way to neatly trim it (or my hair) here. I've looked for trimmers but haven't found them here. I'm sure there are barbers but felt for my brief stay I wouldn't bother. Anyway, I'm already growing it back!

  9. i agree that it looks like your expending less energy. that the general act of walking has become easier.

  10. WOW! I agree with all of the above. I watched both videos at least 6 times to be sure I was seeing that you are definitely moving more gracefully(??). How's that for a description of a "Russ" walk? What about getting up from a chair like you do at the office? Is that easier for you? I hope your beard grows fast, you only have 14 days before you're in the office. We sure have missed you. Love ya, Linda

  11. I think you look a bit faster and not as much stress on your lower body. You look great. Can't wait for you to get home. I miss your smiling face.

  12. Honest opinion ? Well, you state yourself you find it hard to see much difference.

And thats how I feel upon seeing the two clips, any perceived difference is very subtle if there at all, and as such could be explained, as other posters have mentioned, by differing fatigue levels on the days involved.

Not to mention if the latter is slightly improved in comparison to the former, it comes with the added bonus of much intensive physiotherapy you have received in conjuction with the 'treatment'. Physiotherapy which of itself could have loosened you up enabling you to move more freely.

But as is, its hard for me to note anything clearly signifcant that would make me go 'yep'.

  13. Before you left it seems that when you land on your feet they tend to pat the ground...when your foot lands on the ground the whole foot lands, not the typical heel, ball, toe type of walk.

The video in the hospital looks like, but I cannot tell completely as the video does not pan down but it looks like you have more of a heel, ball, toe walk.
